Inspired by limited senses & multi-sensory experiences, focusing on the concept of ‘blind’ through the touch sense of textures. Opposing the negative perceptions of impairments, I created transformations into the visual, therefore defining the perimeters of the senses.
Deconstructing the senses & enhancing them through designed structural shapes & tactile appeals, I wanted to create an experience that appealed primarily through the senses, especially to those visually impaired. Inspired by the raised textures & circular formations of braille, considered features include negative spaces in pattern cutting, conveying codes through pattern, braille colour labels – reflected through usage & visual appreciation – as well as print designs drawn ‘blind’, masking the most prominent human sense.
Details help the blind recognise & establish, as well as enjoy. Reflective material is smooth to touch, yet packs a high-visual impact when in contact with light. Raised seams help the blind distinguish key edges & oversized zips mark the fastenings. Delicate braille labels help identify the colour palette & punched braille patterns help tell the narrative.
See through your hands.
Visualise through your mind.
Experience through your body.
